要評估學生的寫作成果，不外乎從這三方面來評估：流暢度 (fluency)、正確性 (accuracy) 和複雜度 (complexity)。
流暢度指的是在一定時間之內，學習者寫比較多內容。在Wolfe-Quintero et al. (1998) 的定義如下：Second language learners write more fluently, or write more in the same amount of time, as they become more proficient.
正確性指的是寫作者有較少的錯誤。Wolfe-Quintero et al. (1998) 定義如下：Second language learners write more accurately, or produce fewer errors in their writing, as they become more proficient.
複雜度指的是在文法上或詞彙上句子比較複雜。Wolfe-Quintero et al. (1998) 定義如下：Second language learners write more grammatically and lexically complex sentences as they become more proficient.
